Collections Trust and SHARE Museums East

SHARE Museums East worked in partnership with Collections Trust to develop a series of collections care resources. The partnership produced a set of practical ‘how-to’ guides in written and video format.

Importantly, in collaboration with Collections Trust, SHARE Museums East have also produced a Collections Care Syllabus. This syllabus can be used by individuals who wish to improve their collections care; it will also form the backbone of our training offer over the coming three years.

Rationalising collections

Rationalisation is a tricky subject that often brings with it the awkward question of disposal. But it's not just about disposal. Our Effective Museums rationalisation project took improving services to the public as its starting point. Six museums from the region took part, exploring whether elements of their collections were 'passive' or 'active', using findings to make decisions on categorising items for display, handling collections or ethical disposal. A report with templates to support the development of rationalisation plans and policies is on its way. In the meantime, have a look at our new rationalisation animation to get a feel for where to start and what to do.

Collections Care Grants

A fantastic number of museums applied for Collections Care grants and over 25 organisations were successful in gaining funding. A range of resources are being developed including the creation of new Rhino Horns!

Many organisations are taking the opportunity to make their collections more accessible to the public, either through improvements to stores, display areas or digital media.

More opportunities for collections care grants will be made available over the coming Museum Development programme.
