A one-day practical training session on condition reporting

How to Succeed: Condition Reporting

Trainers: Deborah Walton, Kirstie French ACR and Hana Bristow, Conservation Team, University of Cambridge Museums

Suitable for: Staff, trustees and volunteers responsible for collections in the East of England

The UCM conservation team will be leading a one day condition reporting session, including how to plan and set goals, tips for success, pitfalls to watch out for, as well as practical application of all the information covered.

The day will be split between lecture and practical work. Participants can attend in-person or via Zoom. Those participating online will also undertake the practical using household items, a list of options for this will be provided in advance. If possible, a working camera on Zoom would be very beneficial to show the items in question.

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Be able to plan and undertake a realistic programme of work
  • Understand how condition reporting fits into Museum Accreditation and Spectrum 5.0
  • Will know where and when to seek external assistance

Before the session:

  • Some preparation work will be required and documents will be made available in advance – this will not be onerous.
  • An awareness of your museum’s existing policies and procedures would be useful.

  • Condition reporting does require reasonable literacy skills as part of reporting is recording in writing.
  • There are steps at the training venue. Please advise when booking of any mobility issues as we can locate some of the activity to the platform at the top of the theatre where there are no steps.
  • You may also wish to bring a cushion (as seats are hard!) and warm clothing.

Location: Cambridge Scott Polar Research Institute lecture theatre or online via Zoom

Duration: All day. There will be a break for lunch. If attending in person, you are advised to bring a packed lunch as delegates will be able to eat in the room. Alternatively, there will be time for delegates to purchase lunch in Cambridge if required.

More details will be sent out once you have registered for the event.
